Face Fit Testing

Make sure every mask fits

A respirator only protects if it seals properly to the wearer’s face. We arrange on-site face fit testing for your team, carried out by Fit2Fit accredited testers, so you can show every wearer has a mask that fits.

Who needs a fit test?

Anyone who wears tight-fitting respiratory protection at work should be fit tested before first use. HSE guidance (INDG479) sets this out as part of an employer’s duty to make sure RPE is adequate and suitable. This includes:

  • disposable FFP2 and FFP3 masks
  • reusable half masks
  • full-face masks

Loose-fitting equipment, such as powered hoods and helmets, does not need a fit test, as it does not rely on a face seal. We can advise on which option suits your tasks.

Testing methods

Qualitative testing

A taste-based test for disposable masks and half masks. Quick, practical and ideal for testing a group in one visit.

Quantitative testing

An instrument-based test that measures the seal numerically. Required for full-face masks and suitable for all tight-fitting types.

How it works

  1. Tell us what you need. The number of wearers, the masks they use and your site address.
  2. We book the visit. A Fit2Fit accredited tester comes to your site at a time that suits your shifts, so several people can be tested with minimal disruption.
  3. Testing on the day. Each wearer is tested in the mask they actually use. If a mask does not fit, the tester tries alternative sizes or models.
  4. Records and follow-up. You receive a record for every wearer, and we can supply the mask each person passed in.

When to retest

A pass applies to one wearer in one specific mask. Retest when:

  • the wearer changes to a different mask model or size;
  • their face shape changes, for example through weight change or dental work;
  • they grow facial hair in the area where the mask seals;
  • your own risk assessment or policy sets a routine retest interval.
